UNs 9460(S), 9495 and 10088 6/12
9.1mi RT, 2500' EVG
We(Joe, Terri, Scott, Mike, me and Poudre) began this hike of 3 of the 4 Pennock Pass peaks by parking at a pullout at the intersection of Buckhorn Road and Forest Service road 154. We started along Buckhorn by walking up the switchback before cutting in a pretty direct route up to soft ranked UN 9460, which none of us had climbed before. After a few hundred feet of climbing we reached the rocky summit, which had the best views of any of the peaks we'd visit during the day. Dropping back to a saddle with the next peak, we climbed up to UN 9495 in a short time. Again the views were good from this summit, and Pingree Park and the northern Mummies were clearly visible.
From 9495 we descended to Pingree Pass and turned on to Hurley Road, which was in pretty good shape like many of the forest roads in the area. After about a mile we reached an intersection which had a good campsite that someone had recently been using. Turning west, we followed the fork of the road that switchbacked its way nearly to the summit ridge of 10088. From a few outcrops we could see the Stormy Peaks and Signals pretty well, although the actual summit had limited views between the trees. Heading east, we dropped off the summit and gained the end of Hurley Road at the circle, then dropped over top of a small ridge to meet up with FS 154 again. In order to see some more of the area from the groomed roads, we then continued east on 154 and 154B before turning on FS 407. The roads followed through some meadows and crossed some wetlands before taking us back to Buckhorn Road. From here it was a simple road-walk back to 154 and the cars.
More pictures from the hike can be found at Joe's site and Scott's flickr. Thanks for another good hike everyone!
